Tourism is an important part in city construction which plays a big role in economic development,
so local government always places striking stress on the issue of attracting tourists. Government
face with many options to promote local tourism-improve safety by hiring police or to repair
appearance of old buildings and streets. In my opinion, the latter is better.
First of all, there is obvious and unbearable flaws in the former one, which would diminish
people' passion on touring. More policemen mean more people in the touring sites which adds
congestion. For the most of time of year, sightseeing sites are able to accommodate more people.
However, it is undesirable during holidays. For example, it is a common habit for local people in
Shanghai to spend new year's eve in Huangpu river bank. It is conceivable that there is crowed at
the end of every year. Adding more police to the sites would only make the things worse. People
gather together without desirable space, let alone comfortable people distance. Even if something
emergent happened, it would be super difficult for policemen to approach in a short time.
However, renovation on old buildings or streets is likely to satisfy government's expectation
to attract more tourists. It is understandable that people will be attracted to a new city if
novel or newly emerged sightseeing is available. People are willing to visit a city where they
have been to there before, if they can see perceive the city's changes through time. Newly built
architectures enable people to gain a sense of novelty and joy, which is the main reason for most
tourists to visit. Obviously, new buildings or streets provides people sensible reasons to visit
a place, so it is worthwhile for local government to try the method.
Admittedly, for some city, they prefer to choose the former approach to attract tourists for
economic reasons. It is true that repairing appearance of old building is more costly, because
governments require to make pre-preparation before the construction which includes researches
on buildings or road structure, and willingness of local residents. But the process is rewarding
. New outlooking of buildings and roads not only are long-term attraction for people from the
whole country, but also can bring more fame and prestige to the city.
To conclude, repair appearance of old buildings and streets can bring more signatures to the
city which seems to be an appealing lure to promote tourism. It is worthy for local government
to inject funds and spend time on the process.
